Moving the feature ring in SP

I'm designing an open bowl (bread bowl) with a simple feature ring. By default, the ring is at the widest part of the bowl, which is the rim. I want the ring to be about 1/3 of the way down the bowl, but the Move Feature setting in Bowl Settings has no effect. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Jack:
- it would be helpful if you would post the .jason file for us to look at. That way we have exactly what you have.
Use the Share , Export feature on the top menu of SP.

When doing a featured ring in SP if you have featured ring only selected in the storyboard the featured ring tends to be placed on top.

If you select in the storyboard Feature + accent rings (4 or 2 accent rings) , the featured ring will be moved down because of the accent rings.
You can adjust the accent row thickness within the storyboard.

I generally use WTP which gives you full control of each rings. You may want to send Lloyd an email. He may know of a way to move the featured ring down in SP more than what I suggested.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've attached the .json file for your reference. I'm trying to move the feature ring down about 3 rings. I noted in Lloyd's video that he used the Move Feature controls, but it may be he was in WTP. I'll review the video again to make sure. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the file. I will take a look at it. In the meantime here is some info I have from Lloyd from years ago regarding SP and the featured ring."

If you have WTP that may be the better choice for building your vessel.

Remember that Segment PRO is a rules based program to design ‘standard’ segmented bowls. One rule is that by default, the primary feature ring is placed at the widest point of the bowl. This is standard. If you want to move that placement point, you can move that feature group up or down in a vase (for example).

If the widest point of your vessel is at the top of the vessel, it isn’t possible to put the top feature group at the top of the bowl, followed by one or more default rows followed by the primary feature group and so the top feature group (the top row and optional accent row) is not drawn and instead, the primary feature group appears at the top of the vessel. This is absolutely standard practice, although it may not be what you want to do. In a rules-based program, though, someone has to decide what the rules are and I have the honor of doing this and I do it based on 25 years of experience in segmenting.

The good news is that Woodturner PRO is NOT rules based. It follows your instructions and you are free to do whatever you like with every row. If you want the feature ring to be lower in the bowl, place it wherever you want. If you haven’t used Woodturner PRO, you should give it a try because it is VERY powerful. Because of its power, it is harder (but not hard) to learn and much slower.

Segment PRO is very fast because it is rules based and can, therefore, do nearly all of the work for you. In order for it to do non-standard things, though, there would need to be much more user interface and that completely defeats the purpose that Segment PRO was designed to do.

In the end, you need to make a decision based on standard or non-standard. If it is a standard design, Segment PRO will let you design it in a fraction of the time it would take using Woodturner PRO. If it is non-standard, though, Woodturner PRO is the software to use. Just using Segment PRO will quickly show you what is and is not standard and if you have any questions, post them here and I (or someone else) will help you decide.

I was able to download your json file and import it. When I try to open the plan it crashes SP. I suspect you having a color pallet set up that I don't have or a missing species in your pallet.

Anyway, I did see the image of your bread bowl. Based on the rule in SP I do not know how to move your featured ring down.

If you have WTP it would be very easy to build the plan and place the featured ring where you want it. WTP allows you to control each ring.

Sorry could not be more help

Hello Sir,

I imported the file, eagle bowl?, and played with the design, I made the bowl a little narrower on the top, and 3 rings appeared above the feature ring. With a little more wallthickness you can make the design.

As mentioned in post 4, SP places the featured ring at the widest point of the design. The additional rings would depend on what you selected in the storyboard for featured rings.
