Segmented Urn Pattern

I am really wanting to make a segmented urn for my daughter who died in September. I would like for the feature ring to have crosses in it. They should be made of PurpleHeart and outlined in YellowHeart. These are woods that my daughter loved. I there anyone who would be willing to design this feature ring for me. I am at a loss as to how to go about it.
Thanks, in advance, Carol Riley

Hi Carol Ann:
Sorry for your loss. What a nice tribute to your daughter in making an urn.

I have made a featured ring in the past for a bowl. Same concept for an urn. I do have a few questions.
- I take it you will or have designed the urn. Which software are you using?
- It would be helpful to know the diameter of the ring. More importantly what is the segment edge length and height of the segments
- In designing the crosses do you want the purpleheart to be the cross and the yellow heart the background. Or yellow heart as the cross

I can type up instructions on how to make the crosses and provide a jpg image file showing purpleheart and yellow heart.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my treasure a year ago last month, my heart goes out to you.

I have 3 designs for segmented turned urns. Please contract me off line and we can talk further.

Oh, I love this design…I am am using Segment Pro for the bowl. I want the diameter of the feature ring to be 10 or 12 inches, whichever works best. It should be 3 inches high. I want to crosses to be PurpleHeart, YellowHeart should be the accent, and Maple will be the main body. I have all of the WoodturnerPro software, so I can use any of the programs.
You are an angel to do this for me. I fell down a staircase 16 months ago and shattered my right shoulder. I am now recovering for a total shoulder replacement and have not turned in 2 months.

Carol.
I use both software. To ensure the featured ring will work well for you I would recommend you do the design of the vessel in either software.
Then attached either the SegmentPro json file. I can get the number of segments, segment edge length and height from the plan.
Or if you want to do it in WoodTurner Pro. You would just attach the *.wtp file.

In designing the vessel just make a blank featured ring to the dimensions you want. For example 12 segments per ring, 10" outside diameter, 3 inch tall.

You are going to find that it is very easy to make the crosses. I will work up the instructions on how to make the crosses and post.

Since you turn I take it you have access to a table saw and understand how to cut segments.

The images I posted in post is of a bowl and not an urn. The featured ring would work in an urn.

Yes, I have all the equipment that is needed for woodworking. I will get to work on designing the urn.
Thanks again, Carol

I will be working on the write up for how to build a cross featured ring. All I will have to do is add the specific measurements.

Take care.

You are making progress. It is a very simple process in SP to export the plan.

- Start SP, go to Plans , from the open menu box select your plan.
- After the plan is loaded, go to the very top SP menu.
- Go to Share, and click on Export.
a pop up window box should appear saying "Plan Exported Successfully at location: C:/Users/.....
[The json file should have been exported to your Document/ My Segment Pro folder.

You can attach the exported *.json file to a message here on this thread.
- Click on the "Attach Files" button at the bottom of the message box
- The windows File Explorer window will open. Navigate to the *json file. Select it and click open.
You should see the file in the bottom left corner of the box.
The post the reply.

The exported json file will allow me to load it into SP and take a look. I will work on the featured ring and the instructions for making the crosses.
Once done I will do share/export and send it back to you. You can then load the file into your SP by doing a Share/import.
This will help for me to get the numbers I need.

Take care.

Got the plan ok. Thank you
At first glance it looks like a very nice vessel.

Not knowing your building or turning level, I would suggest increasing the wall thickness in the design. Your design has a wall thickness of .375. I personally would increase that by .25 and turn down to the final .375".
(Looking at your summary sheet ring 7 and 8 are just over 0.6" in width. That does not leave much room for error in centering of the rings.

The other thing I picked up on is your featured ring (which will be crosses) are at 6 segments. The featured rings will be 1.5" thick (height/tall).
and 4.931 inches wide. My first guess the cross would be 1.25" tall and about .75" wide.
My question is do you want to leave the featured ring at 6 segments, or would you like it to have 12 segments?

Give me some time over the next few days. I will get you the instructions for the ring written up.

When finished I will send a new json file which you can upload.

You can make any changes that you think are necessary. I like the idea of the feature ring having 12 segments. I've been turning for 5 years now and have turned about a dozen segmented bowls. Will you also include details for the feature ring?
I really appreciate all of your help and am forever indebted to you.

Thanks for the quick response. I will work on your urn over the weekend. I have a class to teach this afternoon at the SCW Woodclub.
Yes. I will include instructions for making the featured ring.

Do you happen to use WoodTurner Pro?

The featured ring segments are going to have to be cut a bit different than cutting segments from a strip. The attached file from Incra destribes one method of cutting the segments of the featured ring. I will give more details later.

Hi Carol
I took your SP Urn design and created in WTP. The reason for that is WTP gives full control of each ring. This allowed for some fine adjustments to the width of each ring to ensure a good amount of glue surface between rings. I also have a slight adjusted SP file from your original which I will also attach in another post.

The design for the featured ring is based on that your yellowheart and purpleheart wood is 0.75" thick. I should have the instruction for building the featured ring done later tonight or no later than Monday 2/21.

The WTP files will give you an idea of the featured ring.

Urn 1 wtp.: 12 Cross featured ring no spacers
Urn 1 wtp A: 6 Cross and 6 accent bars featured ring, .125 spacers between segments
Urn 1 wtp B: 12 Cross featured ring, .125 spacer between segments.

Here is the SP file for your urn project. It has a few minor changes from your original. One being I increased the wall thickenss.

Hope your project goes well. I will have the instructions for building the cross featured ring soon.
Thanks so much for your help and support. I am so anxious to be able to turn this urn for my daughter. I had a total reverse shoulder replacement surgery days before Christmas and have not been able to turn since then. Today I actually went down to my basement and put a chunk of wood on my lathe. Hopefully, I’ll be back at it.

No problem. One of my turning friends at the club had the reverse shoulder replacement about 2.5 years ago. He is doing well and back at it.
Should have the instruction for the featured ring by pm Monday.

You will find the cross construction is a simple process. (example only
- make a laminate based on needed for the center piece of .25" Yellowheart/ 1"purpleheart/ .25" yellowheart. Then cut to 1/4 width. strip
- make a laminate for the arms pieces of .5" Yellowheart/ .25" purpleheart/ .75" "yellowheart, then cut 1/4 width strip.
- glue the 3 pieces together. to form the cross.
- Cut yellowheart stock to make the end pieces. The end blocks should be such that the final assembled segment is larger in size than your SEL on the plan.
You will mark the center of the segment and miter one side, then miter the other side.
I use the method outlined in the Incra pdf file I provided.

Better instructions are coming.

Okay, now I am suddenly braindead...how do I get the files into WoodturnerPro and SegmentPro?
Thanks, Carol

Pretty easy.
For WTP. Just save the attached wtp file in the post to any folder on your harddrive. When you installed WTP it should have created a folder in your Document folder called My Woodturner Pro. You can save the wtp file there. Start WTP go to the folder and select the file. It should open in WTP,

SP is a bit different. Download the json file from the post and save it to a location of your choice. SP also made a folder in Documents called My Segment Pro. If you want safe the attached json file there. Then start SP, go to Share Import. You should get a message that says, plan successfully imported. Then go to Plans, find the file and select it. It should open in SP,

Have fun.
