disk for open segment using Lamination Pro

Hi all,
I am attempting to create a disk using lamination pro for an open segment piece to use as my base. My issue is that I've come up short on both attempts. Using the lamination wizard I've selected my board widths. Then I select my repeating units and cut details. Moving onto gen 1 then select disc view I find the pattern of the disk. I then look at the radial view and this is where I loose it. First the lamination length at the bottom with the 20% allowance doesn't give me enough length for the shown pattern. I have tried both single unit and repeat unit. I have set my clipping region. I am not sure what I am missing here. I've read the tips & tricks, watched the video. Any pointers from users would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It would be helpful if you could post your *.lam file for your project. Should be saved in documents/my lamination pro/.
We can see exactly the dimensions your using in the lamination.
Or post the board widths and the angle you are cutting . We need more info.

I may be wrong but the disc view shows the pattern. the radial view is showing wear you need to cut your first gen lamination. to be able to make the disc. You may want to send Lloyd an email with a description of your base project design.

Hi new to this site so please be patient and allow for a miscue or two.. my issue is that I have no problem determining the cut angle for a 18 segment open ring with a 4 degree separation. It’s finding a formula or better printed chart that gives the segment length for specific ring diameters. I have Segmented Pro but still learning my way around it. Thanks Mike

Lloyd posted this in another thread. the following is the formula used by the software.

Closed Segments: 360 / segments / 2
Example for 12 segments: 360 / 12 / 2 = 15 degrees

Open Segments: (360 - (segments * gap)) / segments / 2
Example for 12 segments with 8 degree gaps: 360 - (12 * 8) / 12 / 2 = 264 / 12 / 2 = 11 degrees

Thanks kindly, I will see what I can do in posting the file, if not I can post the width and angle. I agree with you on the radial and disc view. Best I can figure out anyway.

A couple things to consider -
If you use the single strip method, it will save you wood because the top and bottom segments should be identical (although they seldom are). The problem with the single strip is that as you move away from the centerline of the board, cutting the radial angles will often cut into the design of the next segment and this cannot be shown in Lamination PRO.

I nearly always use the Repeating Unit option and then I always make two disks - one made from only top segments and the other only using the bottom segments. This takes double the amount of lineal laminate but you do get a disk for two vessels And the results are always better.

I’m quite confident about my calculations because on many occasions, I have duplicated the Lamination PRO process by manually drawing each step in SketchUp and have found them to be correct. It is very complicated trigonometry, though, and trigonometry wizard is not something I ever shown on my resume. I probably have made as many Lamination PRO projects as anyone, though, and I use my calculations and have not noticed discrepancies.

A couple things - when I glue strips together to make the laminated board, if I am going to cut the strips at a 30 degree angle, I stagger the strips by roughly 30 degrees so that when my first and last cuts are made on the laminated board, I don’t have a lot of wasted wood.

I also keep the length of my laminated board to 18”-24” as lets me keep cutting accuracy higher. When one board begins to get short, I will glue the remainder to the next board and continue cutting strips, skipping the place where the glue joint is.

Here are a couple pictures of a project I’m working with a High School woodworking class where we’re overlaying disks made from Lamination PRO to a Fender Telecaster body..

I ended up trying the single strip and had better luck. Originally I was trying the repeat method using the noted required Laminate but I came up short both times. Obviously user error but I’ll keep working at it.
